O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm about her performances. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were amazed at her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was always top-quality that he didn't fall in the bottom 3. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
